EXTRACTS FROM ACUMEN NEWSLETTERS Dec2020/Jan2021

Welcome to edition #361 of Acumen newsletter about cricket umpiring and scoring.  Hopefully the new mailing service service will be more reliable - and probably monthly..  If an email reply bounces, please use office@acumenbooks.co.uk.

is open to eveveryone to postzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hopefully also, 2021 will be better than 2020 although January looks bleak worldwide.  To keep you busy in lockdown there are a number of useful links to ECB ACO and other training materials   for umpires. and  for scorers.  I hope to update these shortly.  Most events are free and open to non-members although you are strongly encouraged to join – ECB Association of Cricket Officials

Please post any further suggestions on our Nompere bulletin board, which already includes details of some forthcoming online umpiring courses in Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi.

On other news, we regret to inform you of the deaths of two long serving members, Ajith Perera and Peter McColl..  There have been several other deaths since #359 but nobody that have previously been mentioned in our newsletters.

A Tall Story: The life of Nigel Plews : A biography by Andrew Hignell has been published by Association of Cricket Scorers.

Scorers:  Did you have any success with videoing matches last season or planning to do so in 2021 with ECB's subsidised kit or any other way?  Apparently it can be done with PCS as well as Scorer Pro.  Please share your experiences on our discussion board and hope to organise an online workshop..

I am keen to encourage you to take advantage of the many courses/events that are held online, especially those not in English.  There are many people who live far away from their birth place who would appreciate the opportunity to discuss cricket in their own language.  I have set up a category on our bulletin board to enable organisers to advertise their events free of charge and for you to follow these links when posted.  I am already aware of plans for Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi in the months to come and will circulate in due course.

It's behind you is not just a Christmas Pantomime warning.  It is especially for  players who are acting as umpires at Square Leg.  Please remember to watch the  ball at least as often as you watch the running batsmen.  It may be convenient to stand sideways and swivel your head like a tennis umpire.   Whilst it is important  to adjudicate on a Run Out, it is even more important that you should not be hit on the back of the head!

EVEN A DEAD BALL CAN KILL YOU! A recent incident in Australia has killed one  player/umpire whilst between overs and several years ago, an umpire in Wales was  killed by a return after a boundary six.  Take care and watch the ball.

And finally a quick plug for a few of our own items, some of which may be of interest to your Association Training (or other) officer(s).  In particular, we can offer bulk supplies of Tom Smiths and Law Books at good prices.  Please give advance notice of requirements to get a price and delivery date.

Your association may also be interested in branded bowlers markers.  Several examples can be found here.

Counting the balls - Do you look at a dial whilst the ball is still in play?  99 times out of 100, nothing untoward will happen whilst you are not looking at play BUT ... Why not treat yourself to one of our lever counters - pictures and more explanation here.

ALSO there is no point in using a dial for the overs - it proves nothing - you should be writing them down on a card or in a logbook.  Many Associations have their own versions - and these should include spaces for times of various events.

More tips next month.
